Foolproof Installation of Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Updated: Jun 15, 2023

Peel and Stick Wallpaper
Wallpaper Project

One of the most unique features of our boat is all of the woodwork, and there's a lot of it. Almost too much. Typically we aren't wallpaper people, but it's common to see plenty of wallpaper in boats, so we figured, why not try covering up some of the excess wood? Don't get me wrong, the wood is pretty, but the saying too much of a good thing comes to mind. For the bulk of the surfaces we were covering, we selected a neutral faux grass weave pattern to hide imperfections and lighten the space. Also, it has a sporadic grain, so matching the pattern was unnecessary. We used it in the upper walls of the galley and parts of the salon but we decided not go wall-to-wall, leaving the wood for creating visual interest and contrast. For those wood lovers out there, never fear, there's still plenty of wood left!

There were some concerns about wallpapering as we aren't experienced in applying it. After much research, we found that peel-and-stick wallpaper is the appropriate product. It is forgiving and can easily be removed without damage to the surface. This also takes away the headache of dealing with wallpaper paste or activating the goo.

Peel and stick for the win!

We quickly found out that wallpapering with peel-and-stick wallpaper is a simple and straightforward process that can be completed by anyone with little to no experience in wallpapering. We certainly didn't have any. Since the initial project was so awesome, we papered the banquet area with a blue and white tropical lead pattern, the main head with a different blue and white leaf print, and feature walls in the cabins as feature walls. The master cabin received a light blue woven look, and the v-berth got a vintage nautical vibe for the boys. In Haley's room she put up a Tommy Bahama vibe tropical leaf print in a natural tan and cream color scheme.

We are so happy with the results. The best part is that updating the boat this way was much easier and cheaper than other alternatives. The bonus is that if we tire of the prints we chose, we can remove them and try something new.

We purchased our peel-and-stick wallpaper from Amazon. Measure a couple times and order more than you think you need. We learned the hard way that due to angles and irregularities, we always need more than what the measurements suggest.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to paper using peel-and-stick wallpaper:

Materials needed:

- Peel and stick wallpaper

- Measuring tape

- Scissors

- Utility knife

- Level

- Smoothing tool (squeegee, credit card, or wallpaper smoothing tool)

- Step stool or ladder (if needed)

Step 1: Prepare the Wall

Before starting the installation, ensure the wall is clean, dry, and free of debris or loose paint. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the wall and let it dry completely before proceeding. Remove nails, sticky substances, wall switches, and other things that can be removed to make the installation smooth.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Wallpaper

Measure the length and height of the wall that you want to cover with the wallpaper. We found it best to add an extra 1-2 inches to the height and width of the wallpaper to allow for trimming and adjustments.

Next, use scissors or a utility knife to cut the wallpaper to the correct size. Make sure to line up the pattern correctly if there is one.

Step 3: Apply the Wallpaper

Peel off a small section of the backing paper from the top of the wallpaper, making sure not to touch the adhesive side with your fingers. Start at the top corner of the wall and align the top edge of the wallpaper with the ceiling or crown molding.

Press the top edge of the wallpaper firmly onto the wall and gradually peel off the backing paper as you smooth the wallpaper onto the wall. Use a smoothing tool to remove any air bubbles or wrinkles as you go.

Take your time and smooth as you go. If you get off in the application, gently peel the paper back to reposition.

Continue applying the wallpaper in sections, working your way down the wall. Use a level to ensure that each section is straight and aligned properly.

Step 4: Trim the Excess Wallpaper

Once you have applied the wallpaper to the entire wall, use a utility knife or scissors to trim any excess wallpaper at the top and bottom. Make sure to trim carefully around any light switches, outlets, or other obstacles.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Once you have trimmed the excess wallpaper, use a smoothing tool to press the wallpaper firmly onto the wall and ensure no air bubbles or wrinkles. If necessary, use a damp cloth to gently clean the wallpaper. If stubborn bubbles won't smooth out, use a fine-tipped needle or pin and poke a hole. Using the smoothing tool, press out the bubble but be careful not to tear the paper. I've heard that a blow dryer will also help to smooth out the bubbles but we haven't tried that method yet.

Repeat these steps until complete.

Congratulations! You have successfully wallpapered your wall with peel-and-stick wallpaper.
