Life's a Beach

Or so they say.

A Day at the Beach-Siesta Key

Taking time out of our hectic schedules to spend time with family or friends sometimes takes a backseat. So today, we left our laptops behind and drove down the coast to Siesta Key Beach for a short but rejuvenating time-out.

The water was akin to a delicious salt bath, with the white quartz sand acting as a gentle exfoliant. We took a beach umbrella to serve as a spot of shade in case we found ourselves overheated. In reality, it served as the perfect shade for our smorgasbord of meats, cheeses, and fermented veggies that we nibbled on for lunch.

For those staying at one of the main hotels that border the beach, some services will provide lounges, umbrellas, or, my favorite, a beach cabana. The fees are quite affordable, and you can reserve online. We found Tropical Beach Services through a Google search but have not used them as we are not staying in a hotel that they service.

No visit to the beach would be complete without bobbing on the waves. We found that a store called Five Below carries boogie or bodyboards, for you guessed it, five whopping dollars. The boards seem to be just as sturdy as those costing a great deal more than other surf outfitters. We love to use them to ride the waves into shore, and they are great for those of us who are less coordinated or skilled wave riders.

As if rollicking in the water wasn’t enough, we found beachcombing to be plentiful, with beautiful shells scattered along the beach. To be courteous, we only took a few shells. We will paint them in pretty coastal colors and put them in a glass jar to display our Siesta Key Beach treasures.

When visiting the beach, remember to take a means to dispose of your garbage and watch your plastic bags! We take reusable bags to haul our stuff in and out of the beach instead of plastic grocery bags. Plastic bags wreak havoc on our planet and take an eternity to biodegrade. We keep reusable grocery bags in our cars, so we always have the means to transport just about anything, especially our garbage. (Our little PSA moment.)

After getting our fill of sand and surf for the day, we headed to the Siesta Key Village and enjoyed a scoop of ice cream to complete the outing. Be sure to allow a little extra time to spend in the village because people watching is plentiful, and there’s plenty of shops to find souvenirs to remember your visit.
