Walking around Sarasota is a great way to experience the city's unique culture and attractions. It's nice to park the car and head out on foot. There are plenty of parking options both on the street and parking garages.
Here's a possible itinerary for a day of exploring Sarasota's points of interest:
1. Start at the beautiful Bayfront Park, which offers stunning views of Sarasota Bay. Walk along the scenic path and enjoy the sea breeze and the peaceful surroundings.
2. From Bayfront Park, head north to the Burns Court Historic District, a charming neighborhood filled with old Spanish-style homes, unique shops, and art galleries. Take your time to explore the area and appreciate the architectural details of the buildings.
3. Next, go to Main Street, where you can find various restaurants, cafes, and shops. Check out the local boutiques and specialty stores (go to our post describing our favorite boutiques on Main) and stop for a coffee or a snack at one of the many outdoor cafes.
4. Continuing on Main Street, you will reach the Sarasota Opera House, a beautiful historic building restored to its original glory. Take a moment to admire the stunning architecture and grab a few pictures!
5. Further down Main Street is the Sarasota County Courthouse, a notable example of Art Deco architecture. The building's exterior features intricate geometric patterns and detailed reliefs, which are worth taking a closer look at.
6. Finally, head back towards Bayfront Park and stop at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art on the grounds of the former Ringling estate. The museum houses a vast collection of art and artifacts, including works by Rubens, van Dyck, and other renowned artists.
This itinerary should take approximately 2-3 hours, depending on your time at each location. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen, and stay hydrated, especially during the warmer months. Enjoy your tour of downtown Sarasota!
Visit our post about the statues of Sarasota and tack that on to your tour. We recommend doing the statues by car, so try to walk the tour, then hop in your car and check out the statue tour.
