Selecting a Boogie Board

Boogie boarding on the Gulf of Mexico
Surf's Up!

In a previous post, we discuss the best places on Florida's Gulf Coast to surf. In this post, we talk about how to select a boogie board. While surfing is fun, we have found boogie boarding more attainable, especially while still learning about surfing. So much more goes into learning to surf. When watching videos, the surfers look like one with the board and the ocean. It actually looks kind of easy. Nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is, surfers are far more athletic and agile than most realize. They know how to read the waves and maneuver the board with the ease and finesse of a cat walking on a tightrope.

We decided to give boogie boarding a go to learn how to wrangle the waves, master paddling, and become familiar with being pummeled by the ocean. The rest of the family has learned how to stand up on the surfboard, so the rest of us eventually hope to join the ranks.

By the way, the term boogie boarding is also known as body boarding. It's simply a board you lie on with your upper body and ride the waves into shore. It is not the same as surfing in that you don't stand up on a boogie board, but some kneel. Learning to move into a kneeling position helps when learning to surf because doing a pop-up is difficult for most of us.

When selecting a boogie board for bodysurfing in the ocean, there are a few key factors to consider, especially if you want to accommodate a range of weight bearing and the ability to tolerate 2-3 foot waves. Here are some tips to help you pick out the right boogie board:

1. Board Size: Larger boogie boards are generally better for bigger riders, providing more flotation and stability. Look for a board at least 42 inches long and 22 inches wide to ensure that it can comfortably support your weight and give you enough surface area to catch waves. Alternatively, if you are a smaller rider, you can go for a shorter board.

2. Board Shape: A board with a wider nose and tail will provide more stability and make it easier to catch waves. A board with a narrower nose and tail will be more maneuverable and better suited for more experienced riders.

3. Board Material: Boogie boards are typically made from foam, varying in density and thickness. For a heavier rider, look for a board with a higher-density foam and thicker core to ensure it can withstand the weight and force of the waves.

4. Leash: Choose a board with a leash, a cord that attaches the board to your wrist or arm. This will help prevent the board from getting lost in the waves and make it easier to retrieve if you fall off.

5. Price: Boogie boards come in various prices, so consider how much you are willing to spend. While higher-priced boards may have more advanced features or better-quality materials, a more affordable board may be perfectly suitable for your needs.

Choosing the right boogie board for bodysurfing in the ocean requires careful consideration of the rider's weight, skill level, and wave conditions. By considering these factors, you can find a board that will provide a fun and safe boarding experience.
