Time for Polishing the Brass

Updated: Jun 19, 2023

That dreaded task of polishing the brass in the boat comes along too often. We have handrails, light fixtures, and clocks that all need regular cleaning. Suffice it to say we don't get to the task as often as we should. But when we do, the 30-year-old brass sparkles.

When performing this dreaded task, we usually use the product which is tried and true; Brasso. Unfortunately, it has some objectionable ingredients, and we are out of it anyway. So I reached for the Pink Stuff paste, not knowing whether it would do the trick. I was reluctant to try it because, unlike other home cleaning pastes, this one doesn't have many objectional ingredients that probably make those other products so compelling.

Plus, the paste isn't exactly marketed for brass cleaning.

We try to be as eco-conscious as possible but sometimes that’s tough to do as much of the eco-friendly products just aren’t up to the job.

Much to our surprise, the gentle pink goop did a fantastic job. Just like with any cleaner, it took a while, but let's face it, brass polishing on a boat just takes time.

On the container, it states: The Miracle Cleaning Paste. I agree. It is effective and it works great on cleaning the stainless-steel sink, which makes me wonder why they call it that when clearly, stainless steel gets stained, especially from coffee. The Pink Stuff polished that stainless up so nicely that I wiped it over the stainless-steel refrigerator and the glass cooktop. All of which responded well.

With growing confidence and immense curiosity, I took the product outside to try working on a few stubborn stains on the stairs up to the helm. I started by taking a small amount of paste and gently rubbing it into the stains. I let it sit for just a few minutes, then, with a soft microfiber towel, I wiped away the dirt. Because the stairs have a slight texture, it is hard to get in, and you don't want to rub too much at the gel coating. Any abrasive friction will remove the outer coating, which is not a good thing. But if done gently, the stubborn stains can be safely removed.

The product also works great on the outside chrome to remove the film of outdoor pollutants.

It should be said that this is not a sponsored post. This post is based on my experience and the product that I happened to have on hand. I like that the ingredients are safe and non-toxic, meaning using them on a boat should be relatively safe. The company claims to be environmentally responsible and cruelty-free.

I have run out of the paste and will replenish my supply soon. It can be found at most retailers both online and in-store. The price point is quite affordable and a little goes a long way. Recently I picked up a spray version which I love for cleaning sinks and surfaces, and I have since found the spray version to do a better job on the refrigerator, microwave, and cooktop.

So far, the Pink Stuff hasn’t performed any actual miracles, but it has made some of our tougher cleaning a lot easier
